At the Defcon hacker conference Friday, security researcher Mike Davis will present the results of years of research into a family of electronic safe locks all sold by Switzerland-based lock giant Dormakaba. Over the last two and a half years, Davis has found techniques to crack three different types of the Kaba Mas high-security electronic combination locks the company has sold for securing ATM safes, pharmacy drug cabinets, and even Department of Defense facilities, representing millions of locks around the world. Davis found that he could open many of those ATM and pharmacy locks in as little as five minutes with nothing more than an oscilloscope and a laptop.  [Read More via Wired]

Federal Circuit Holds that Section 230 Locks Out Locksmiths

As we noted in our recent post on the Second Circuit case Herrick v. Grindr, LLC, Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act (CDA) continues to provide immunity to online intermediaries from liability for user content, despite pressure from courts and legislatures seeking to chip away at this safe harbor. The Federal Circuit case Marshall’s Locksmith Service Inc. v. Google, LLC serves as another example of Section 230’s resiliency.
In Marshall’s Locksmith, the Federal Circuit affirmed the dismissal of claims brought by 14 locksmith companies against search engine operators Google, Microsoft and Yahoo! for allegedly conspiring to allow “scam locksmiths” to inundate the online search results page in order to extract additional advertising revenue. Introducing Lock.Chat

Introduction

Our Slack chat was a great success but we needed something a bit more robust and conducive to our goals. We wanted an online community that allowed the sharing and archiving of lock related files (videos, PDFs, documents) in addition to chat features. Slack allowed us some of that but not all; we were at the behest of a provider and our capabilities were capped. With that said, I’d like to introduce

Lock.Chat

Utilizing the free, open-source Rocket.Chat platform, we have created a new community at https://lock.chat/ using our own VPS. This puts us in complete control of what we can accomplish with this community. The community heart of the community are the channels, or areas of discussion. The channels are where we communicate and share information, pictures, files, and more.
Lock-related channels include:

  • Locks
  • Locksmithing
  • Locksport
  • Safes

We also have a few “off-topic” channels:

  • Food
  • Gardening
  • Telephones

If you participated in the original LockReference.com Slack, your transition will be seamless because the two platforms are almost identical. If you are new to either, I think you’ll find https://lock.chat is very easy to use. Best of all https://lock.chat is on available all platforms: web, desktop, and mobile (Android, iOS, Windows). Registration is easy, simply navigate to https://lock.chat in your browser and complete the signup process. Once you have done so, you can use your login information to access the community via the Rocket.Chat app (server URL is, you guessed it, lock.chat).
Please take a moment to sign up and come visit us over at https://lock.chat – I think you’ll find your experience very enjoyable!

With New Technology Comes New Ways to Die

Since 2005, 37 deaths by carbon monoxide poisoning have been attributed to vehicles with keyless ignitions that were inadvertently left running.
